Introduction: Building a Simple Wooden Birdhouse This guide will walk you through creating a basic, functional birdhouse from readily available wood. This project is perfect for beginners and provides a great introduction to woodworking basics. It's a rewarding project that also benefits your local wildlife.
Materials and Tools You'll Need
  • Wood (pine, cedar, or redwood are good choices approximately 1" x 6" x 6ft)
  • Wood glue
  • Nails or screws
  • Saw (hand saw or power saw)
  • Drill with drill bits
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil
  • Sandpaper
  • Safety glasses
  • Optional: Wood stain or paint (exterior grade)
  • Step 1: Cutting the Wood Pieces First, you need to cut the wood into the following pieces based on this example birdhouse size:
  • Front: 6" wide x 8" tall
  • Back: 6" wide x 10" tall
  • Sides (2 pieces): 6" wide x 8" tall (tapered to 6" at the top edge, creating the roof angle)
  • Bottom: 6" wide x 6" deep
  • Roof (2 pieces): 6" wide x 7" deep
  • Carefully measure and mark the wood before cutting. Ensure accurate cuts for a better fit. Always wear safety glasses while sawing. Remember these measurements can be adjusted to your preferences for a larger or smaller birdhouse.
Step 2: Drilling the Entrance Hole and Ventilation/Drainage On the front piece, drill an entrance hole. The size of the hole depends on the birds you want to attract. A 1 1/2" hole is suitable for wrens and chickadees. Drill this hole approximately 2" below the top edge. Then, drill several small ventilation holes near the top of the side pieces, and a few drainage holes in the bottom piece.
Step 3: Assembling the Birdhouse Body Apply wood glue to the edges of the bottom piece and attach the front, back, and side pieces. Use nails or screws to secure the pieces together. Clamp the pieces until the glue dries for a stronger bond. Make sure the back piece extends higher than the front to create a slope for the roof.
Step 4: Attaching the Roof Apply wood glue to the top edges of the front, back, and side pieces. Attach the roof pieces, ensuring they overhang slightly on all sides. Nail or screw the roof pieces in place.
Step 5: Sanding and Finishing Sand all the edges and surfaces of the birdhouse to remove any splinters and create a smooth finish. If desired, apply an exterior-grade wood stain or paint to protect the birdhouse from the elements. Let the stain or paint dry completely before placing the birdhouse outside. Consider avoiding bright colors which can attract predators.
Conclusion: Your New Birdhouse! You have now successfully built a simple wooden birdhouse! Find a suitable location to hang or mount your birdhouse, preferably in a sheltered spot away from direct sunlight and strong winds. Clean the birdhouse out annually after the nesting season. Enjoy watching the birds make your birdhouse their home.
